New York State (NYS) has slowing overall demand for electricity, but a growing gap between peak load and base load, which diminishes the overall efficiency of the NYS electricity system. By creating electricity markets at the distribution layer, the NYS Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) initiative seeks to enable significantly increased levels of Distributed Energy Resources (DER)—including renewable generation, demand response, and energy storage—to help manage peak load, drive greater system efficiency, and increase reliability and resilience of the grid.
REV will make New York State one of the early adopters of advanced grid technologies currently available. This will require addressing some of the key questions with regard to grid modernization, including what business models work and why, and which technologies provide the most benefit and how should they be implemented.
REV offers an important and unique opportunity to participate in a ground-breaking effort to develop future utility business models, and it is important that DOE be an integral part of this initiative. DOE has already recognized REV as a unique opportunity to gain insights on grid modernization and has been supporting this effort by providing technical assistance through its national laboratories.
