This project consists of both the modeling and testing efforts that will help understand physics behind how geomagnetic disturbances (GMD) and electromagnetic pulses (EMP) impact key components such as transformers in power grid and what damages they may cause.
The first year will focus on the analytical and numerical modeling of the physics behind the GMD/EMP’s impacts to power grid components. The second year will focus on the testing-based study of the mechanism of insulation failure under short-duration EMP transients. And the third year will focus on the testing-based analysis of the multi-physics coupling of transformers under long duration transients.
