The Need. Grid resilience investments are limited by the difficulty in assessing and demonstrating the benefits of those investments to utility and community stakeholders.
Objective. This project will investigate how a community can be designed to be resilient through coordinated grid investment, and how electric utilities of various configurations can plan for resilience and benefit from these investments. The team will develop detailed case studies for San Antonio, Texas and Buffalo, New York, focusing on effective integrated resource planning and metrics, control systems, and inverter-dominated islanding with storage and regional consortia.
Planned Outcomes. Design methods and metrics for resilient grid systems, reflecting regional differences, will support adoption by partners. We will identify a national path forward to internalizing resilience planning via partnerships between utilities, communities, and regulators.
